What is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme?
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has been introduced to
encourage the installation and use of systems running on renewable
energy that will, consequently, reduce the UK’s dependency on fossil
fuels and therefore lower harmful emissions.
MCS provides information about microgeneration products and services available in the marketplace that have been subjected to the rigorous qualifying process. The scheme is designed to allow users to purchase qualifying products and services with confidence.
MCS certifies both Products and Installers. For MCS Product
Certification both manufacturers and producers can apply to have their
products certified. The process is relatively simple and NQA aim to
guide you through it. The next few pages and downloads break the process
down and should assist you with what to prepare for MCS Product
Certification. Take advantage of our Transfer Offer TODAY...!
For Installers wishing to qualify as Approved Installers under the MCS, another part of the business, NICEIC operates a second scheme which is subject to a separate application,
assessment and certification process. For more information on the MCS
Installer Scheme please click HERE.
In order for the UK Government to meet its high targets for renewable energy by 2020, they have introduced financial incentives to encourage correct installation – Feed In Tariffs and Renewable Heat Incentive.
What are Feed-in Tariffs?
Since April 2010, homeowners and businesses have been able to generate their own electricity and sell the surplus power back to energy suppliers. This is all part of a bigger drive by the UK Government to cut our reliance on fossil fuels.
This has the potential to save households and businesses a fortune in energy bills and even make money from the energy they produce, tax free, with some calculations suggesting the total average saving per household totalling around £2,500 per year.
This is already happening in the social housing sector and soon Local Authorities will be able to sell surplus energy back to the grid, increasing funds for the Local Authorities and creating demand for skilled installers.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change have outlined their policy on Feed-in-Tariffs. Government is behind it and the opportunity is there for the taking. For a summary of Government actions and intentions go to: www.decc.gov.uk.
What is the Renewable Heat Incentive?
The Government will also be offering households the potential to earn money for generating their own heating from October 2012. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has been introduced to encourage the installation of heat producing renewable technologies such as Biomass Boilers, Solar Thermal and Ground Source Heat Pumps. The RHI is still under consultation, however for the latest information please visit www.decc.gov.uk.
From October 2012, RHI tariffs for domestic properties will become available at the same time as the introduction of the Green Deal. The Government has confirmed that renewable heat installations installed in homes since 15 July 2009 will get the Renewable Heat Incentive once it comes in, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. They have also confirmed that this will include those who receive support under the RHPP(Premium payment) scheme.
However, the Government has not yet published its proposals for how the RHI will work in the domestic sector, so we cannot at this stage provide more information on this. In particular we cannot guarantee that those eligible for an RHPP grant will also be eligible for the RHI.
What does this mean for manufacturers selling their products in the UK market?
Installations will only be eligible for the FITs and the RHI if the installation has been completed by an MCS Approved Installer, using an MCS Approved Product.
