ISO 14004 Updated to Help ISO 14001 Implementation

23 March 2016
The revised version of ISO 14004 was published on 1 March after the final draft received unanimous backing.

ISO 14004:2016 provides general guidelines for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving a robust, credible and reliable environmental management system (EMS).

This translates to the achievement of three key objectives, which are:

  • The enhancement of environmental performance

  • Fulfilment of compliance obligations

  • The achievement of environmental objectives

The guidance standard is an excellent accompaniment to ISO 14001, which specifies the requirements of an EMS. Whilst ISO 14004 does directly interpret the requirements of ISO 14001 it does elaborate on the concepts of life-cycle perspective, leadership, environmental protection and strategic environmental management.

“ISO 14004 is recommended reading for getting the most from your environmental management system and enhancing environmental performance.” Richard Walsh, Lead EMS Assessor.
