OHSAS 18001 Health & Safety Certification | NQA

OHSAS 18001 is the International Standard for Health and Safety Management Systems.

OHSAS 18001 is the International Occupational Health and Safety Management Standard. It provides a framework for the effective management of OH&S including all aspects of risk management and legal compliance. It addresses occupational health and safety rather than any specific product safety matters.

  • Identify workplace hazards and implement effective preventive controls
  • Prevent injury and ill-health among your workforce
  • Reduce lost time accidents therefore cost saving
  • Evaluation of  compliance with legislative requirements
  • Improves the safety culture
  • Identify areas for training and competency requirements
  • Improve productivity
  • Assist with pre-qualification processes from your customers
  • Promote corporate responsibility

OHSAS 18001 is right for over 90,000 certified organisations in over 127 countries around the world. It’s right if you and your organisation need to show ‘best practice’ in managing the safety of people it is responsible for.

NQA has certified a wide range of organisations in different sectors including Jaguar Land Rover and Veolia Water.

Biffa’s NQA certified OHSAS 18001 system helped Matthew Humphreys (Head of Safety, Health & Quality,Biffa), to achieve a 40% reduction in serious incident levels, plus significant cost savings from fewer lost time incidents year on year.

Organisations that implement OHSAS 18001 need:

  • a clear management structure with defined authority and responsibility.
  • defined objectives for improvement, with measurable results
  • a structured approach to risk assessment.

Health & safety management failures, performance and the review of policies and objectives should be regularly monitored to ensure improvements and business benefits are realised and prioritsed accordingly.

“NQA stood out in their level of understanding and knowledge of Jaguar Land Rover’s business and the implications for Health and Safety within the organisation.” Jaguar Land Rover

  • Customer satisfaction. Meet customer requirements consistently whilst safeguarding their health and property.

  • Reduced operating costs. Less down-time due to incidents and ill health and lower costs from legal fees and compensation means money saved.

  • Improved stakeholder relationships. Make the health and property of staff, customers and suppliers more of a priority and people will respond.

  • Legal compliance. Understand how statutory and regulatory requirements impact your organization and its customers.

  • Improved risk management. Identify potential incidents and implement controls and measures to keep risk as low as possible.

  • Proven business credentials. Independent verification against recognized standards speaks volumes.

  • Win more business. Procurement specifications often require certification as a condition to supply so gaining the standard opens doors.

ISO 45001 Coming soon

A new ISO standard, ISO 45001, on occupational health and safety management system requirements is currently being produced by a Project Committee; the intention is for the new standard to be published in October 2016.

The standard will follow the new structure of Annex SL and be aligned with the 2015 versions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.  This will enable simpler and stronger integration of these management systems.

The second committee draft of ISO45001 has now been approved to move to the important next step of DIS stage (Draft International Standard). We can expect to see DIS 45001 by the end of 2015.
