The highly anticipated ISO 45001 is unlikely to be published until 2017 after the Draft International Standard failed to gain approval by the committee ISO/PC 283.
A ballot was open between 12 February and 12 May for Participating members of Committee ISO/PC 283 on whether to approve the draft international standard (DIS) they were elected to develop.
The DIS failed to achieve the all-important support required for approval – two-thirds of Participating members had to be in favour with less than a quarter against (including abstentions).
More than 3,000 comments were received during the consultation that took place during the period of the ballot. This is a significant amount of feedback to consider in the next iteration of the standard and is likely to delay publication of ISO 45001 until February 2017.
“The delay of ISO 45001 may be frustrating for some, but it is all part of standards development, which is crucial to get right. We still encourage users of OHSAS 18001 to plan ahead for migration to ISO 45001 based on the fundamental concepts, Annex SL structure and core requirements, even though certification to ISO 45001 won’t be possible until the standard is published in 2017.”
Terry Fisher, Lead OHSMS Assessor.
