World Environment Day 2025

02 June 2025
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, harming wildlife, oceans and threatening ecosystems worldwide. That’s why this year’s World Environment Day 2025 is focused on one urgent message: “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

For decades, plastic pollution has seeped into every corner of the world, leaching into the water we drink, into the food we eat, and our bodies. While plastic pollution is a major concern, it is also one of the most fixable of today’s environmental challenges, with some obvious solutions at hand. In recognition of the day, we have come up with some useful ways that you can be more conscious around the office and at home!

What can you do at home?

  • Reusable shopping bags: Keep a canvas or fabric bag on hand to avoid picking up plastic carriers at checkout.
  • Cut out single-use plastics: Say no to straws, disposable cups, plastic-wrapped fruit and cling film. You can try beeswax wraps, reusable containers and refillable products instead.
  • Buy in bulk or refill: Stock up on products or look for refills for items like laundry detergent, shampoo, and cleaning supplies. It reduces both plastic waste and trips to the shop.
  • Reduce packaged foods: Processed and meat products are often heavily packaged in plastic. Cutting back where you can, helps reduce demand and waste.
  • Smarter shopping: Home delivery from shops, means fewer car trips and less packaging per household.

What can you do in the office?

  • Reuse: Switch to a reusable water bottle or coffee cup made of stainless steel, glass or bamboo.
  • Reduce packaging: Bringing lunch in a reusable container helps cut down on plastic-wrapped meal deals and takeaway boxes.
  • Recycle smartly: Use recycling bins and encourage your team to use them properly. Every plastic bottle recycled is one less in landfill or the ocean.
  • Sensible printing: Not all plastic pollution is visible - printers, toners and packaging contribute too. Cut back on printing where you can.
  • Avoid disposable cutlery: Keep your own set of metal or bamboo utensils at your desk to avoid using plastic forks, knives, and straws from cafés.

Taking your committment further...

We understand that individual actions both at work and at home can have a powerful cumulative impact on our planet. However, for organisations looking to take their environmental commitment even further, frameworks such as ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) provides a structured way to reduce environmental impact and improve performance across business operations. If you're aiming to meet sustainability goals, ensure compliance, or simply do your bit for the planet, this internationally recognised standard provides the tools to make it happen.
