60 Seconds With Denis McCarthy

What does your role involve?

My role involves carrying out ISO certification audits to ensure companies comply to ISO standards. I audit ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22301, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701. I also audit some Highway Sector Schemes. I meet various roles within companies from Managing Directors to Administration and it's enjoyable to see how different some companies approach the audit process. 

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love that every day can be different. I audit a variety of industries such as construction, shipping, telecoms, recruitment, transport, recycling and many more. I learn a lot from audits but can also spread best practice during audits. The variety of audits keeps me focused on specific company activities and I find that helps me learn more about how companies and different industries are managing locally and globally.

It's also interesting to see small businesses remaining involved in their communities, particularly, helping with climate change and local environmental issues. I love seeing companies develop new products and technologies such as AI and how businesses are becoming more aware of these changes ahead of the changes.

Why did you choose this career path?

I fell into auditing by accident when I was a performance officer. I was part of the compliance team and got my first ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Lead Auditor Certification. I then worked in security services before I was asked to be a Lead Auditor for a certification body. Since then, I've developed further Lead Auditor qualifications.

What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

I'm a published author and have completed a serial killer trilogy. I am just about to publish my second non-crime book at the end of June. Stephen King watch out!!!!

Are there any books, podcasts or series you’d recommend?

Fried McFadden is my favourite author at the moment and I've started listening to her audiobooks, which helps pass the time driving. The Housemaid is a really good book. I also listen to the Overlap podcast a lot.

A proud moment or achievement

When I worked for charities in war torn areas, I helped to develop education programmes for children. It was great seeing children from rival military factions learning together with no prejudices. The idea that different ideologies can be brought together was great to see.   

A challenge you’ve overcome in your career

When working for charities during military conflicts, there were a number of challenges, particularly when getting aid into priority areas. Communicating with different agencies and local militia was a challenge. Being successful always made me feel proud that, in some small way I manged to help out.
