As part of the plan to address climate change, this Act sets targets for Northern Ireland to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. One of its targets includes achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Act is divided into 6 sections, which are as follows.

Part 1- Emissions targets and sectoral plans.

Part 2 - Carbon budgets.

Part 3 - Reports and statements against targets and budgets.

Part 4 - Reports by Committee on climate change.

Part 5 - Further oversight.

Part 6 - Supplementary.
Part 1 of the Act contains plans to meet emissions target for various sectors, such as:

energy;

renewable electricity consumption;

infrastructure ;

industrial processes;

waste management;
-
agriculture;
-
fisheries;
-
transport; and
-
active travel.
