Amends/Commences:

  • Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015

  • Planning and Development Act 2000

Comes into force: 7th September 2021

Jurisdiction:  Republic of Ireland

Significant changes have been made to the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015 to help the Government transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich and climate neutral economy by 2050. These changes include the introduction of:

  • National climate objectives – a commitment of the state to reduce the extent of further global warming and achieve the transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy;

  • Climate action plans - an annual update to the climate action plan 2019 to tackle climate breakdown; and

  • National long term climate action strategies – to specify how it will achieve the national climate objective.

Changes to the Planning and Development Act 2000 require development plans to include objectives to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and address the necessity of adaptation to climate change, taking account of the local authority climate action plan.
