Regulation (EU) 2025/1988 as regards per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in firefighting foams

Amends/Commences: Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Comes into force: 22nd October 2025

Firefighting foams containing PFAS* in a concentration equal to or greater than 1 mg/L for the sum of all PFAS must not be placed on the market or used from 23rd October 2030, unless exempt.
*PFAS include any substance that contains at least one fully fluorinated methyl (CF3) or methylene (CF2) carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I attached to it).
Exceptions apply, as detailed in the Annex, allowing PFAS-containing equipment in a concentration equal to or greater than 1 mg/L to be used and placed on the market.
