Workplace Noise

24 April 2024
For the financial year April 2024 to March 2025 Workplace Noise will be one of the health topics specifically covered by HSE’s Inspectors

Hearing Protection has been selected to allow for an initial review of occupational noise across all industries and to help duty-holders understand that to get hearing protection to work they also need a good management system.

What aspects of Hearing Protection HSE are likely look at (but not limited to)?

  • Do the dutyholders risk assessments consider the need for hearing protection?

  • If required, has the dutyholder correctly signposted hearing protection zones?

  • Can the dutyholder demonstrate they have selected the correct hearing protection – proof of acoustic performance?

  • Can the dutyholder demonstrate they have selected the correct hearing protection – proof of engagement with staff on fit and comfort?

  • Can the dutyholder demonstrate they have provided information, instruction and training on the correct use of the hearing provided?

HSE is promoting the CUFF acronym to help provide a simple message around hearing protection

  • C – Condition. Is the hearing protection in a good state of repair?

  • U – Use. Are the workers using hearing protection when it is needed?

  • F – Fit the ear. Is the hearing protection fitted or worn properly?

  • F – Fit for purpose. Has the hearing protection been correctly specified?
