60 Seconds with Randy Pittman

25 October 2018
Having been with the company for 14 years, Randy has spoken to us about what has kept him with NQA for so long and his suggestions for a successful audit outcome.

What is your role?

As the EHS Business Unit Manager I am responsible for all aspects of Accreditation conformance, Operational support and business development of Environmental, Health & Safety Management Systems and related standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and R2. I also participate with industry related working groups as a technical advisor when appropriate.

Most memorable moment at work?

One of the reasons NQA is successful is the global strategy to provide consistency within processes. This was recently demonstrated to me when I was providing ISO 45001 training to NQA auditors in a different country and discovered that the consistency of our auditor approach and interpretation of the ISO standards was nearly 100%.

Favorite things about working for NQA?

NQA has a 'one team' approach to solving challenges. There is little inter-departmental competitiveness. Instead, an approach where everyone will pull together and work as a unit to make sure we are providing the most effective client experience possible.

Top tip for people looking at certification?

To achieve your goals and objectives from the certification process you must have open and honest communication with your certification body throughout the relationship. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, before, after and even during the audit. Although it can sometimes feel daunting to have an auditor go through your business with a fine tooth comb, it's important to remember that we are on your site as an independent partner to verify your achievements to conformance and intended outcomes.

How might you be able to help our readers?

There are lots of questions related to the rules of certification and interpretations of standard requirements. I would be pleased to assist you with understanding the “why?” behind everything that is happening and why we may need certain things from you in order to complete the audit.
