ISO 50001 the International Standard for Energy Management Systems.

Helps you with

Energy Policy, Carbon Reduction, Energy Security, Cost Control, Legal Compliance, Culture Change, Corporate Responsibility, Reputation, Resource Management, ESOS Compliance.

WHAT IS ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 replaces BS EN 16001 and is the international standard for Energy Management providing the most robust framework for optimising energy efficiency in public and private sector organisations.

Certification to this standard demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to continual improvement in energy management, allowing them to lead by example within their respective industries and ensure related legislative and regulatory requirements are met.

It’s right if you and your organisation want to take control of the way you use energy and manage the related costs more effectively. It is particularly beneficial for organisations with significant energy expenditure.

If you already hold certification to ISO 14001, the ‘basic framework’ is already there and the benefits of ISO 50001 are within reach.

We have certified a wide range of organisations in different sectors including EPS Pumping and Treatment Systems, ETDE at the Cabinet Office, The Royal Mint and Costa Coffee.

“We are very proud to be one of the first organisations globally to achieve this standard which emphasizes the ongoing commitment of the Royal Mint to sustainability and world class energy management systems.” Chief Executive, Royal Mint

Process >

  • Application for registration is made by completing the ISO 50001 Quote Request Form. This provides information about your organisation so we can accurately define the scope of assessment.
  • Assessment to ISO 50001 is undertaken by NQA - this consists of two mandatory visits that form the Initial Certification Audit (explained below).
  • Certification is issued by NQA and maintained through a programme of annual surveillance audits and a three yearly recertification audit.

Stage 1

The purpose of this visit is to confirm that your organisation is ready for full assessment. The assessor will:

  • confirm that the environmental management system conforms to the requirements of the standard including the identification of aspects and impacts
  • confirm its implementation status
  • confirm the scope of certification
  • check legislative compliance
  • produce a report that identifies any non-compliance or opportunities for improvement and agree a corrective action plan if required
  • produce an assessment plan and confirm a date for the Stage 2 assessment visit

Stage 2

The purpose of this visit is to confirm that the management system fully conforms to the requirements of ISO 50001 in practice. The assessor will:

  • undertake sample audits of the processes and activities defined in the scope of certification
  • document how the system complies with the standard by using objective evidence
  • report any non-compliances or opportunities for improvement
  • produce a surveillance plan and agree a date for the first annual surveillance visit

If the assessor identifies any major non-conformances, certification cannot be issued until corrective action is taken and verified.
